House & Family History: Balmuto is an irregular U-plan house that contains, as probably its oldest part, a rectangular tower house of circa 1400. Substantial additions were made in the 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries. The 18th century additions, designed by John Baxter, Jr., were demolished in the 1960s and the House itself was reconstructed in the 1970s and 1980s. Balmuto was the seat of the Boswell family for centuries.
Garden & Outbuildings: Extant are the derelict Stables of circa 1800, as well as the early 19th century West Lodge, a building with a fine Roman Doric portico.
