The house from a circa 1909 postcard
Chinese 18th century Qianlong painted enamel lotus vase formerly in the collection of Balcarres House
House & Family History: Balcarres contains important 17th century ceilings. The library has 1622 renaissance paneling from the Rubens House (Rubenshuis) in Antwerp, the former home and studio of Peter Paul Rubens.
Collections: On May 13, 2020 Lyon & Turnbull auctioned 14 lots from Balcarres House, including a rare 18th century Chinese imperial vase that sold for £45,000 (see "Images" section). The Qianlong painted enamel lotus vase was made in the Imperial Workshops in the Forbidden City and features a floral design against a vibrant yellow ground. The vase was probably part of the collection of Chinese art and literature amassed at Balcarres in the 19th century by the 25th Earl of Crawford.
Garden & Outbuildings: In 1813 a sham ruin in the style of a circular tower (extant) was built on a hill on the Balcarres House Estate.
