House & Family History: In 1902 the Avery Hill Estate was acquired by the London County Council, whose successor bodies have owned it ever since. Since 1906 the House has served as a variety of schools, most notably Avery Hill College of Education. A boys' secondary school is scheduled to open in the House in 2022. Avery Hill House is notable for its indoor winter garden, the second-largest Victorian glasshouse in Britain, after the Temperate House at Kew.
House Replaced By: There was an earlier house on the site, elements of which were incorporated into the current house.
Garden & Outbuildings: The former estate has been open to the public as Avery Hill Park since 1903.
