Notes: Paterson was educated at Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University, from where he graduated with a master's degree in 1882. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and studied at the atelier of Jean-Louis Pascal between 1883 and 1886. He was an improver and draftsman at Messrs. Burnet, Son & Campbell, 1886-89, and worked in the office of Sir Robert William Edis in 1890.
