Ashdown House

  • House & Family History: Ashdown is one of only two extant English works (the other is Hammerwood, Sussex) of Benjamin Latrobe, later architect of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Latrobe designed Ashdown just before he emigrated to America (1795). The House is ashlar-faced, three-bays wide, with a middle Ionic portico of four columns.

Comments: Pevsner, writing in "The Buildings of England: Sussex," calls Ashdown "…very perfect indeed, a prelude to what he was going to do at Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington."
