Built / Designed For: Colonel John Palmer Chichester

House & Family History: Arlington, as seen today, is primarily the creation of Miss Rosalie Chichester, who lived here for 85 years, until her death in 1949. In the basement, from May to September, visitors can view Devon's largest colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats via the "batcam."

Collections: Arlington contains model ships, tapestries, pewter, and shells, in addition to the National Trust's collection of horse-drawn carriages. A series of four tapestries at Arlington are particularly noteworthy; the set, known as "The Four Continents," was designed by Jean Jacques Francois Le Barbier the Elder in 1786 and were woven by De Menou at the Beauvais manufactory in France 1788-90 for the Controle General des Finances at Versailles. The tapestries were in Arlington Court when it was left to the trust by Rosalie Chichester.

Garden & Outbuildings: The Arlington Court Estate encompasses 2,700 acres (at its height in the 1870s, the estate stood at 5,300 acres). The Stableblock houses one of the best collections of 19th century horse-drawn vehicles in the country. The 30-acre gardens are mostly informal, but include a small Victorian garden with conservatory and ornamental pond, leading to a partially restored walled kitchen garden.
