House & Family History: Alton Castle was a ruin when the Earl of Shrewsbury engaged A.W. Pugin to rebuild it on an ancient outcropping of rock in the mid-19th century. In September 1996 Alton Castle opened as a residential youth center operated by the Catholic Church.
