Achnacarry House (Achnacarry Castle)

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier house, Achnacarry Castle, sited near the current house, was burned by the Duke of Cumberland's troops in 1746, after the Battle of Culloden.

Built / Designed For: Donald Cameron, XXII Chief of Clan Cameron

House & Family History: In the 1920s a major price war erupted among the world's largest oil companies. At a secret meeting in August of 1928 at Achnacarry, an agreement was reached between Royal Dutch Shell, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (later the British Petroleum Company), and the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (later Exxon) to fix the price of world oil through production quotas. The result, called the Achnacarry Agreement (aka the As-Is Agreement), was signed on September 17, 1928, and is considered the foundation of the international oil cartel. During World War II Achnacarry House was home to the Commando Basic Training Centre of the British Army, which, between 1942 and 1945, trained over 25,000 commandos (British, American, French, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, and Belgian), many of whom were part of Operation Overlord.
