House & Family History: In 1994 Woolsington Hall and 340 acres were purchased for £1.32 million by Sir John Hall's family business, Cameron Hall Developments. At the time Sir John was chairman and majority shareholder of Newcastle United football club and planned to convert Woolsington into the club's new football academy. However, the academy was built at Little Benton instead and Woolsington remained empty. Subsequent redevelopment plans for the Estate were rejected by the council; in 2002 the House was placed on English Heritage's at-risk register. In 2007 Sir John revealed a new £5 million plan to convert the House into a 40-bedroom hotel; these plans were not carried out. In October of 2012 Woolsington was put up for sale for £2 million, but withdrawn in May 2013. On the night of December 30, 2015 Woolsington Hall was gutted by a fire, described as an arson attack by Northumbria Police, that left the House a roofless shell.
