Collections: Simon Sainsbury formed an exceptional collection of art at Woolbeding, much of it formerly in the collections of Britain's most famous and celebrated country houses. At Sainsbury's death in 2006 the best of his picture collection was bequeathed to the National Gallery and the Tate (the total value of the paintings in the bequest has been estimated at £100 million). On June 18, 2008, Christie's auctioned much of the rest of Sainsbury's collection, bringing a total of £16.5 million.
