Earlier Houses: Michael de la Pole's earlier fortified manor house was granted a license to crenellate in 1384. This house was replaced by the current 16th century house, which includes elements of the earlier house.
House & Family History: The moated Wingfield Castle was the inspiration for Godsend Castle, the home of the Mortmain family in Dodie Smith's 1949 novel "I Capture The Castle."
