House & Family History: Hugh Boscawen's nephew inherited Tregothnan and was created 1st Viscount Falmouth in 1720 for his services to George I as controller of the Royal Household. His son, John, married Joan Blanchland, who brought with her land on which was later discovered rich deposits of copper; the successful mining of this copper considerably increased the Boscawen fortune. The 4th Viscount was created 1st Earl of Falmouth at George IV's coronation and engaged William Wilkins Jr., 1816-18, to enlarge and remodel Tregothnan. Wilkins's work resulted in the dour 17th century house being reborn in the Tudor castle style. The pinnacles on the angle turrets are replicas of the pinnacles of East Barsham Manor, a late Tudor house in Norfolk. Lewis Vulliamy enlarged the south façade for the 2nd Earl, 1845-48, adding the towers at the west end and a gabled wing. Of the mid-17th century house, two rooms survive: the corner parlour and the room directly above it.
Garden & Outbuildings: The grounds as seen today are the result of Evelyn Boscawen, 6th Viscount Falmouth, who laid out the gardens over 40 acres in the 1850s and 1860s. The garden is noted for its many varieties of camellias and its rhododendrons.
