Earlier Houses: There was an earlier Jacobean house on, or near, the site of the current house.
House & Family History: After the death of the 3rd Lord Bateman in 1931, Shobdon Court was sold; most of the house was demolished in 1933, leaving just the former service block and stables standing (elements of Shobdon's staircase were reinstalled in Apley Park, Shropshire). During World War II Shobdon was requisitioned by the government and used as the officers' quarters for RAF Shobdon. The remains of the house have been divided into flats.
Chapel & Church: The Grade I-listed St. John's Church, rebuilt in the mid-18th century in the Rococo style, was called "a complete masterpiece of English Rococo" by Simon Jenkins in his 2001 book, "England's Thousand Best Churches."
