House & Family History: From 1937 until 1956 Piers was the home of the novelist Evelyn Waugh. It was in the library that Waugh wrote his most famous work, "Brideshead Revisited," as well as "Officers and Gentlemen" and "Men at Arms." Piers Court had been purchased for £2,000 by the parents of Waugh's second wife, Laura Herbert, as a wedding present (Laura's father, Aubrey Herbert, was the second son of the 4th Earl of Carnarvon). Piers was put up for sale in September 2004 for £2.75 million, together with 23 acres and the Grade II-listed William and Mary coach house (with Dutch gables). Piers Court was listed for sale again in 2010, this time for £2.5 million. In 2019 it sold for £2.9 million. In December of 2022 the house, together with 23 acres, was sold at auction for £3.16 million. (We are grateful to Andrew Triggs for supplying information about the history of Piers Court).
