House & Family History: Middleton Hall has an enormous range of building dates that span from circa 1100 until 1730. The House is the oldest domestic building in Staffordshire still in use today. In the 17th century Middleton was the home of Francis Willughby, a founding member of the Royal Society and the father of natural history. Sir Hugh Willoughby, the Tudor explorer, and Cassandra, 1st Duchess of Chandos, were both born at Middleton. Queen Elizabeth I stayed at the House for a week in 1575.
