  • House & Family History: Ludlow Castle was transformed over a period of centuries into a fortified royal palace. Upon the founding of the Council for Wales and the Marches, the Castle became a government seat, and was frequently used in the Medieval period as a seat of the prince of Wales. It was here, that Arthur, Prince of Wales (son of Edward VII), died on April 2, 1502, which resulted in his younger brother, Henry, eventually succeeding as King Henry VIII. Napoleon's brother, Lucien, was held prisoner in Ludlow Castle in 1811, the same year that the property came into the ownership of the earls of Powis.
