Built / Designed For: Philip Langdale
House & Family History: The original Georgian house was built for Philip Langdale in 1765 by the York architect Thomas Atkinson. The House is of a pale pink brick with a pediment and two wings linked by quadrant walls. In 1820 a Catholic Chapel, a Billiard Room, and a porch were added to the flanking wings; at this same time the pale pink brick was covered with gray stucco. These 19th century additions were swept away 1957-60 by Francis Johnson for Countess Fitzwilliam (the heiress of the original Langdale family). Johnson restored the original Palladian plan of the center block, returned glazing bars to the windows, removed the stucco, and demolished the Porch, Chapel, and Billiard Room.
Garden & Outbuildings: The grounds were laid out in 1768 by Thomas White.
