Horkstow Hall

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier Jacobean house, designed by John Thorpe for Sir Thomas Darrell, was built on the site of the current house.

    House & Family History: In the 19th century the left wing was increased to two stories and extended.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: In 1797 a Roman villa's mosaic floor was discovered under a kitchen garden at Horkstow. In 1927 the floor was dug up and loaned to the British Museum, which displayed the charioteer panel (one of 17). Since 1979 the entire mosaic has been on display in the Hull Museum.
