House & Family History: Charles Shaw-Lefevre, later 1st Viscount Eversley, who greatly altered Heckfield Place, was the second-longest serving speaker of the House of Commons. In the 1980s Heckfield was purchased by the Thales Group, who greatly expanded it as a commercial conference and training center and operated it until 2002 as Thales Commercial University. In 2002 Heckfield was purchased by Gerald Chan, an American, who converted the House into an ultra luxury country house hotel, which opened in 2018.
