Haughton Castle

  • House & Family History: Haughton Castle was originally built in the 13th century as a tower house and enlarged and fortified in the 14th century. By the 16th century the Castle was in disrepair and ruinous. Circa 1640 the Smith family acquired Haughton; between 1816 and 1845 the Smiths performed significant alterations, converting the ruinous Castle into a substantial country house. In 1862 the Crawshaw family came into possession of the Estate; a West Wing was added for them by Anthony Salvin in 1876. In 1888 Haughton was acquired by the Cruddas family; it is today a private home owned by the Braithwaite family.
