Culver House (Culver Hill) (Hammerfield)

  • Built / Designed For: Fredrick Lee

House & Family History: The inventor James Nasmyth lived at Culver House for the last half of the 19th century. Nasmyth, famous for his development of the steam hammer, rebuilt and enlarged the house, then called Culver Hill, and renamed it Hammerfield. In the early 20th century Culver House was the home of Lord Ronald Gower. A younger son of the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, Lord Ronald was a sculptor and author who moved in the exalted gay circle of Oscar Wilde. Lord Ronald, who wrote biographies of Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette, is most remembered today for his sculptural works of Shakespeare and four of his principal characters, which are installed at Bancroft Gardens in Stratford-upon-Avon.
