The House from a 1916 postcard
Percy Bysshe Shelley from an 1870s cabinet card
Built / Designed For: Richard Felde
House & Family History: The stone core of Field Place (today the kitchen) is probably 14th century. A late 17th century addition created a fourth side and closed in the three sides of the 15th century section to form a courtyard. In 1931 a matching bay, incorporating a shell-hood door from Ipswich, was added on the north side. On August 4, 1792 Percy Bysshe Shelley was born at Field Place. The famous author spent his formative years here and it's virtually certain that his fantasies were conceived at Field Place. The Shelleys had been landowners in Sussex for generations; Shelley's grandfather, Sir Bysshe Shelley, 1st Bt., was the builder of Goring Castle in Sussex.
Garden & Outbuildings: The gardens contain early 18th century gates removed from a house in Chiswick Mall, London.
