Earlham Hall

  • House & Family History: Earlham was purchased by the Gurney family in 1785 and remained their home until 1912. The family's time here, and the children's subsequent lives, including prison reformer Elizabeth Fry during her childhood, are described in "The Gurneys of Earlham" by Augustus J.C. Hare, published by George Allen in 1895. Earlham was visited by many of the Gurneys' friends, including Amelia Opie, Harriet Martineau, and William Wilberforce. The Norwich Corporation purchased the House in 1925; Earlham today houses the University of East Anglia's School of Law.
