Croxteth Hall

House & Family History: Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children stayed at Croxteth Hall on October 9, 1851, the day before they visited Liverpool. Most of the interiors were destroyed by a 1952 fire. After the death of the 7th and last Earl of Sefton in 1972 the estate passed to Liverpool City Council.

Collections: The remaining contents of Croxteth were sold by Christie's September 17-20, 1973.
Garden & Outbuildings: The estate was sold off in 1972, after the death of the last earl, with 500 acres of parkland kept as a setting for the house. The parkland contains the working home farm and the Victorian walled garden. The walled garden is home to Liverpool Botanics, founded by William Roscoe in 1802, and one of the oldest horticultural collections in Britain. The parkland is also home to the National Collection of Dracaena (dragon trees).
