Notes: Rome was the architect's birthplace; he came to England in 1767 and worked for brothers Robert and John Adam. Bonomi was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1789 with the support of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Bonomi was recognized in 1804 as the honorary architect for St. Peter's in Rome. Jane Austen names him in "Sense and Sensibility" as a popular architect. Bonomi's designs resemble the Adam brothers' style in certain ways; however, Colvin describes his interiors as "more robust."

Notes: Paine's first major work was the building of Nostell Priory, which took seven years and made his name as an architect. Christopher Hussey stated that Paine had such a successful country house practice that "Robert Taylor and Paine divided the country house practice of Egnland between them."
