Charlton Park (Charlton Place)

  • Earlier Houses: There were earlier buildings on, or near, the site of the current house.

House & Family History: Between 1820 and 1830 Charlton Park was a regular meeting place for the clandestine affair of George IV and Elizabeth, Marchioness Conyngham (Charlton was a convenient venue for the two lovers because Lady Conyngham's country home, Bifrons House, was located nearby). During World War II Charlton Place was requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence; in 1946 the house was purchased for use as a Dr. Barnardo's children's home. In 2021 the house, together with 129 acres, was listed for sale for £3.5 million.
