House & Family History: Thomas Edwards's designs for Carclew were likely based on Palladio's planned Villa Ragona.
House Replaced By: In the 20th century a new house was built in the garden of the 18th century house.
Comments: Situated in a magnificent position overlooking Restronguet Creek, Carclew was once considered one of the finest houses in Cornwall.
Garden & Outbuildings: Sir Charles Lemon was one of the first people in England to receive rhododendron seeds from Sir Joseph Hooker's 1848-50 Himalayan expedition. The Rhododendron arboretum at Carclew was planted by Sir Charles in the the early 1850s.
