House & Family History: One of the greatest of all Welsh families, the Hill-Trevors were first recorded at Brynkinalt in 942! Their house is located just over the border into the principality from Shropshire in a ravishingly beautiful situation looking out over the valley of the River Ceriog. Today the handsome main block of the house represents a rebuilding of the ancient mansion in brick under the aegis of Sir Edward Trevor in 1612. The paneled entrance hall still remains redolent of his time and is hung with countless family portraits, including that of Sir John Trevor (1637-1717), speaker of the House of Commons. Sir John's daughter, Anne, provided the family's connection with the viscounts Dungannon, who lived at Brynkinalt through the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Charlotte, Viscountess Dungannon, was herself largely responsible for the large-scale rebuildings of the house in the early 19th century. These works, probably assisted by the Shrewsbury architect Joseph Bromfield, gave Brynkinalt its large columned and galleried Great Hall, together with a sequence of elegant Regency reception rooms. Viscountess Dungannon's conservatory, perched on a terrace above the park, is especially effective, linking the mansion with the romantic park that she, too, embellished with follies and plantings. Today Brynkinalt is home of The Hon. Iain Hill-Trevor, his wife Kate, and their children and is the well cared-for hub of one of the most dynamic British estates.
