Broughton Hall

  • Built / Designed For: Henry Tempest

    House & Family History: Annie Tempest, famous for her cartoon "Tottering by Gently," which has appeared in "Country Life" magazine since 1993, grew up at Broughton. She has said that Lord Tottering is modeled on her father and that she draws on her memories of Broughton Hall in writing her comic strip. The Tempest family has lived in Yorkshire since Roger Tempest settled in the area in 1120.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The house is today set in a 3,000-acre estate. William Andrews Nesfield designed the grounds, including the Italianate garden, the gazebo, and the fountains.
