Barton Manor

  • Earlier Houses: An early 17th century house was rebuilt as the core of the current 19th century house.

Built / Designed For: Queen Victoria and Prince Albert

House & Family History: The 500-acre Barton Estate was leased from Winchester College by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert from 1844, and purchased by them in 1853. The ruined 17th century house was rebuilt as a guest house and annex to the 342-acre Osborne Estate. In August 1909 Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family stayed at Barton (the famous photo of George V and the Tsar standing arm-in-arm was taken at Barton). In 1902 King Edward VII gave Osborne to the nation, but kept Barton as his home during Cowes Week. In 1991 Barton was bought for £1 million by music and theater producer Robert Stigwood. In June 2004 the estate was listed for sale for £9 million; it sold in late 2005 for £6.5 million.
