Banstead Wood House

  • Earlier Houses: There was at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: Francis Baring

House & Family History: In 1930s, after the death of Charles Garton, the last private owner, Banstead Wood House was made ready for conversion into a hospital. During World War II the house was turned into an emergency military hospital and the grounds housed the Banstead Prisoner of War Camp. In 1948 Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) officially opened the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children (named after her mother). In 1973 the facility became a hospital for people with learning disabilities. In 1998 the entire hospital complex closed and the buildings were abandoned. In 2005 the derelict buildings were purchased by Try Homes, who created Banstead Wood Estate, a gated community of 109 flats spread among the various buildings.
