Earlier Houses: There was an earlier, moated castle, probably of the 11th century, near the site of the current house. Elements of this earlier house were probably incorporated into the fabric of the present 13th century house.

House & Family History: King Henry VII visited Allington during the time it was Sir Henry Wyatt's seat. Henry VIII visited in 1527, 1530, and 1536. It's been suggested that Sir Martin Conway's restoration of Allington Castle (converting it from a derelict medieval castle into a modern country house using his wealthy wife's money) was the model for Dreever Castle in P.G. Wodehouse's 1910 "A Gentleman of Leisure."
