Thornbury Park

  • Built / Designed For: Henry Wenman Newman

House & Family History: Thornbury Park appears to have been formed around the Park of Thornbury Castle; in 1679 the Estate was purchased by Richard Newman. There is no evidence of a house of any size on the site until the 19th century, when, in 1829, Henry Wenman Newman inherited the Estate. Newman set about building the square, Neoclassical house with a service wing and an Ionic portico, which stands today. The Thornbury Estate remained in the Newman family until 1914, when it was purchased by Captain Richard Alexander Bennett, who occupied the House until his death in 1950.
