Gunton Park (Gunton Hall)

  • House & Family History: Matthew Brettingham designed Gunton Park circa 1742. Samuel and William Wyatt together designed the eight-bay colonnade of Tuscan columns on the South Façade, both of the conservatories, the west bow, and the East Façade, all for the 1st Baron Suffield, and all completed by 1781. Robert Adam was engaged to enlarge the House, 1767-68; in the end, only his design for the Church was carried out. The Gunton Estate was dismantled in 1980 and sold off piecemeal; at the same time, Kit Martin purchased and restored the House, converting it into 20 condos.

Collections: The contents of Gunton were sold in Norfolk September 16, 17, 25, and 26, 1980. Included in the 1980 sale was a group portrait of Edward Vernon, 4th Baron Suffield, and his family by Ramsay Richard Reinagle, which entered the collection of Eagle Star Insurance at 22 Arlington Street, London (aka William Kent House). On May 11, 2005 Christie's sold the Reinagle (as part of the sale of the entire contents of 22 Arlington Street) for £288,000, against an estimate of £80,000-120,000.
