House & Family History: Kiplin Hall began life in the 1620s as a hunting lodge built for George Calvert, secretary of state to King James I. Calvert was created 1st Baron Baltimore by James I in 1624 (the peerage became extinct on the death of the 6th Baron in 1771). The city of Baltimore, Maryland, was named after him; his younger brother, Leonard Calvert, was the first governor of Maryland; the state flag of Maryland is the banner of Lord Baltimore's coat of arms. During World War II Kiplin was occupied by the Royal Air Force.
