Horsted Place

  • Earlier Houses: An older house on the site was demolished to make way for the current house.

Built / Designed For: Francis Barchard

House & Family History: Horsted Place is built of red brick with black brick diapering and dressings of Bath stone. The Pugin-designed staircase was made by George Myers, the builder of the House; part of the staircase was exhibited in the Medieval Court section of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Lord Nevill, owner of Horsted in the late 20th century, was treasurer to the Duke of Edinburgh and, as such, regularly entertained the queen and Prince Philip at Horsted Place.

Comments: Pugin's work at Horsted features some of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Britain.
